Description
A small but finely executed oil on copper depicting an animated outdoor garden celebration. Numerous elegantly dressed figures in Regency costume populate a lush parkland setting, with couples dancing at left, groups of ladies conversing at right, and a small gazebo or bandstand visible in the middle distance. The loose, animated brushwork used to render the foliage and the confident handling of the figures is consistent with English painting of the early 19th century, working in the tradition of the fête galante — a genre popularised by Watteau and carried into British art through painters such as George Morland and his circle.
Copper was a favoured support for small cabinet pictures of this type, prized for its smooth surface allowing fine detail, and its durability. The quality of the figure painting here suggests a trained hand rather than an amateur.

Provenance

The reverse bears a label for G. A. Rose, Picture Cleaner and Restorer, who operated from addresses on Pelham Street, South Kensington, London, between approximately 1908 and 1938.

Condition
The painting displays extensive age craquelure (cracking of the paint layer) consistent with a genuine early 19th century work. There is notable paint missing in the upper left corner. It does appear to have a repair
