Showstopping oblong jardinière in the Sèvres manner, its serpentine body hand-painted with lilac ribbon bows and garlands of roses and flowers. It is framed in beaded gilt bronze mounts at the rim and base and raised on four gilt bronze feet.
The royal manufactory of Sèvres created the most celebrated porcelain of 18th-century France for the court of Versailles, and its ribbon-and-garland designs became the signature of Marie Antoinette's taste. Through the 19th century, Parisian workshops answered collectors' longing for that elegance with fine porcelain painted "in the Sèvres style" and mounted in gilt bronze. A jardinière of this size and quality, with its hand-painted ribbons and garlands, was made to be the centerpiece of a grand dining table or salon.
Spectacular filled with flowers or orchids, or displayed on its own on a console or sideboard.
