French opaline reached its golden age between about 1820 and 1870, when glasshouses such as Baccarat and Saint-Louis produced luminous colored glass for the luxury boutiques of Paris. Turquoise blue was one of the most celebrated colors of the era, and caskets mounted in finely chased gilt bronze were sold in the Palais-Royal arcades as treasured gifts. Today, richly colored opaline caskets like this one are among the most collected pieces of French glass.
