A jewel of a 19th century French vesta case, the pocket match safe a gentleman or lady carried in the era of gaslight and candlelight. The gilt case is worked in champlevé enamel, with scrolling arabesques in cobalt blue, oxblood red, white and soft pink blossoms set against a finely textured gold ground. The hinged lid is enameled to match and still snaps neatly closed.
Vesta cases took their name from the wax "vesta" matches of the 1800s, and French makers turned them into tiny works of decorative art. This one is in the rich, colorful taste of the Napoleon III period.
Charming on a bar cart, coffee table or desk, or kept in a pocket for lighting candles.
