Lush Flemish-school still life in the manner of the Dutch masters: a stone urn overflowing with roses, tulips, irises, and anemones on a ledge before a soft parkland sky. Oil on canvas, tacked to a European stretcher, in a handsome gilt frame. Sourced in Belgium.
Flower painting reached its height in 17th-century Flanders and Holland, when artists such as Jan Brueghel the Elder and later Jan van Huysum composed lavish bouquets of blooms that could never flower at the same time, celebrating abundance, beauty, and the fleeting nature of life. Painters continued this cherished tradition into the 20th century, and this work carries it forward with its rich palette, carefully modeled petals, and classic urn-on-a-ledge composition set against an open sky.
A striking statement piece for a dining room, living room, or entry.
