Antique Oil on Panel Portrait, Young Dutch/Flemish Nobleman, 17th–18th Century
A striking oval portrait of a young nobleman, oil on wood panel, in a gilt frame with decorative scrollwork crown mount, set on a walnut backboard with brass corner ornaments.
The Subject & Costume
The sitter is depicted at the height of Dutch Golden Age fashion — broad-brimmed black felt hat with crimson feather plume, magnificent gold lace falling band collar, dark brass-buttoned doublet, and deeply slashed red velvet outer garment with fur-trimmed undersleeves. This precise combination of costume elements places the sitter firmly within Dutch or Flemish aristocratic society of the 1630s–1660s — the world of Amsterdam's great merchant families, minor German princelings, or Orangist nobility surrounding the House of Orange-Nassau.
The composition follows conventions associated with artists in the tradition of Van Dyck, Mierevelt, and Van Ravesteyn.
Age Indicators
- Natural warp of the wood panel — centuries of differential contraction
- Extensive, deep, irregular craquelure with paint cupping — extremely difficult to fake
- UV examination reveals uniform blue-green fluorescence consistent with genuinely aged natural resin varnish
- Skilled glazing technique, fine lace detail, and individual hair strokes throughout
The Frame
The Victorian presentation frame — gilt oval with scrollwork crown, red velvet backing, brass fittings, and keyhole hanging loop — dates to approximately 1880–1900, suggesting a discerning 19th-century French collector recognized this work's importance and had it professionally framed for display. Two layers of history in one object.
Condition: Stable and consistent throughout. Craquelure settled. Frame and ornaments intact.
Conservatively dated: late 19th century after a 17th-century original. Potentially: Dutch/Flemish School, 17th–18th century, oil on panel. Frame: French Victorian, circa 1880–1900.
Dimensions: Overall 9.5" H by 7.5" W (painting is 6.5" H by 4.5" W)
