Antique Bronze Miniature Frame with Sistine Madonna Portrait

Overview: A petite bronze oval frame crowed with ornate ribbon-and-bow crest, enclosing a finely rendered oval porcelain painting depicting Raphael's celebrated Sistine Madonna. 

Date 1880-1900 

History: Reproduction of Raphel's Sistine Madonna (1512) were enormously popular throughout the 19th century, particularly after painting was transferred to Dresden in 1754 and became widely celebrated. Miniature versions painted on porcelain were prized as refined keepsakes and devotional objects, commonly displayed in bourgeois homes across Europe.
