Antique French Oil Portrait, “D’après Watteau,” Signed & Dated 1901 — Oval Gilt Frame
A distinguished and highly decorative antique oil painting on canvas, signed by French artist S. Marteau and inscribed “d’après Watteau” (after Watteau), dated 1901. This elegant portrait depicts a young French noblewoman in the Rococo manner, dressed in a rich teal silk gown with gold ribbon accents and exquisite lace décolletage, her powdered hair adorned with yellow bows — a faithful homage to the style of Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684–1721), the founding master of French Rococo painting. The painting is presented in a magnificent, ornate oval gilt frame with scrolling acanthus leaf and beaded border details, consistent with late 19th/early 20th century French framing traditions. The velvet-lined inner border adds depth and elegance.
Measures approximately 31” x 25” overall framed.
